Africa

africaThe Department of Anthropology has on staff three faculty members whose primary research focus is Africa, one in archaeology, two in socio-cultural anthropology. They are part of a critical mass of Africanist faculty in the Maxwell School and around the College of Arts and Sciences, supported by holdings in the University Library and the only set of The Kenya Archives in the United States. With impetus from Vice Chancellor Deborah Freund, the University is inaugurating an M.A. in Pan African Studies, which will undergird a renewed institutional effort to strengthen graduate work in Africa. While it will be housed in the Department of African-American Studies, it includes Anthropology faculty and Anthropology graduate students with an Africa interest will benefit from course offerings.
