Consortium on Qualitative Research Methods

The Research Group on Qualitative and Multi-Method Analysis

June 18-19, 2011, Maxwell School of Syracuse University

The Institute for Qualitative and Multi-Method Research (IQMR) is held at the same time as a Research Group. While the Institute focuses on teaching research skills, the Research Group is a workshop for authors who are developing qualitative and multi-method research techniques, or applying such methods in innovative ways.

The 2011 Research Group took place during the mid-Institute break on Saturday June 18 and Sunday June 19. As noted below, the workshop discussed both article and book projects.

The article projects discussed at the 2011 Research Groups included:

Process Tracing, Its Promise, and Its Problems, David Waldner, University of Virginia

Thick Network Analysis: Broadening the Methodological Repertoire for Studying Networks in World Politics, Oliver Westerwinter, European University Institute

The book project focus of the Research Group partly arises from the development of a new book series at Cambridge University Press on Strategies of Social Inquiry. The Research Group has been extended to include discussion of book manuscripts or proposals that are actively under consideration for the Cambridge series, as well as other manuscripts. The projects discussed at the 2011 Research Group included:

Natural Experiments in the Social Sciences (under contract, Cambridge University Press), Thad Dunning, Yale University

A Tale of Two Cultures: Contrasting Qualitative and Quantitative Paradigms (under contract, Princeton University Press), Gary Goertz, University of Arizona and James Mahoney, Northwestern University

Field Research in Political Science (under contract, Cambridge University Press), Diana Kapiszewski, University of California, Irvine; Lauren M. MacLean, Indiana University; and Benjamin L. Read, University of California, Santa Cruz

Multi-Method Social Science: Combining Qualitative and Quantitative Tools (under contract, Cambridge University Press), Jason Seawright, Northwestern University
